| What does homeschool graduation look like these days?
At one time, homeschoolers often took the GED as a form of graduation (or just as a method of easily jumping on to college). No more!
Homeschooling has become so common that colleges and employers have become accustomed to dealing with its graduates.
Options for Diplomas
1. Your homeschool is essentially a private school, so you can issue your own diploma. You can buy one that only requires you to fill out some information or you can design your own (as we did). You’ll want to name your homeschool for purposes of diplomas, college applications and job applications.
2. If you use a correspondence school or a shelter program, that is probably where your student’s diploma will come from.
3. Some homeschool organizations issue diplomas.
Options for Graduation Celebrations & Ceremonies
1. Consult your graduating student to see what he or she would like to do. Some students prefer small receptions or parties to celebrate; others want to walk down the aisle in cap and gown.
2. If you choose a full-fledged ceremony, you can participate in one that’s conducted by a homeschool group or you can arrange your own. Contact homeschool groups in your area, as well as state groups, to find out about ceremonies. For more information on both, go back to our Graduation Page to find resources and ideas.
3. If your student prefers, hold a reception at a church or in your home where you honor him for his achievements.
4. Sometimes a private school will allow homeschoolers to participate in their graduation ceremonies.
Whatever method of celebrating you choose, we do recommend that you find some way to mark the graduation of your student. He or she has worked hard to reach this point in life and a celebration honors that accomplishment. Be sure to send out announcements to relatives and friends, too! |
